Georginio Rutter sends one-word reply to Wilfried Gnonto after what he did in Leeds draw vs Brentford

Georginio Rutter was quick to praise his ex-Leeds United comrade Wilfried Gnonto after he provided Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the late equaliser against Brentford.

Daniel Farke’s side stretched their unbeaten run to three Premier League games, as Leeds secured a 1-1 draw at Brentford on Sunday.

Jordan Henderson gave Brentford the lead with 70 minutes on the clock, but Whites number nine Calvert-Lewin came to Leeds’ rescue with an 82nd-minute leveller.

Calvert-Lewin was involved in controversy for Leeds as his appeals for a penalty were dismissed by referee John Brooks, with the Leeds striker believing he’d been dragged down in the box by Brentford defender Nathan Collins.

Regardless, it was still a point gained at a tough venue for travelling sides with Brentford losing just once from their opening eight Premier League home games this season, and it was Gnonto who created the key moment for Leeds.

After entering the fray from the substitutes bench with a little over 15 minutes to play on Sunday, Gnonto reminded everyone of his quality when delivering an excellent cross that was met by the head of Calvert-Lewin, whose header left Caoimhin Kelleher stranded in the Brentford goal.

In the hours that followed the full-time whistle at the Gtech Community Stadium, Gnonto took to his Instagram account to mark the result and his assist with a collection of images from the match.

Rutter took the opportunity to respond to his former Whites teammate’s post, with the Frenchman simply saying: “Facile,” which translates to “easy” in English.

Having signed for Leeds in January 2023 from Hoffenheim, Rutter called time on his Elland Road stint, moving to Brighton in this summer’s transfer window for a reported fee of £40million.

Wilfried Gnonto faces tough Leeds United dilemma

Ever since his appointment as Leeds manager in the summer of 2023, Farke has almost exclusively deployed a 4-2-3-1 system.

As such, Gnonto was able to carve out a key role for Leeds during his first two seasons at Elland Road, making 44 appearances in all competitions in 2023-24, before following that up with 46 appearances last season, as per FotMob.

However, ever since shifting to a back-three approach mid-game in their 3-2 defeat away at Manchester City on 29 November, the Leeds boss has gone with a 3-5-2 from the start in their last three Premier League fixtures.

This has now seen his Leeds side move away from the use of traditional wingers such as Gnonto, and given that the Whites are yet to taste defeat in this new formation, it looks unlikely Farke will revert back to his 4-2-3-1.

Therefore, Gnonto may no longer have a significant role in Leeds’ side, with perhaps his opportunities to make an impact such as the one he made at Brentford now restricted to being from the substitutes bench.
