Gary Neville claims Billy Gilmour is better than Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips has come in for criticism from Gary Neville after England’s draw with Scotland on Friday.

While the 25-year-old impressed in the Three Lions’ European Championship win against Croatia, assisting the only goal of the clash, he was not able to influence proceedings against the Scots.

Phillips did not have a bad game, but he did not put in a five-star performance either.

Neville reckons Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour had a better game, insisting the youngster is superior technically.

“Gilmour, [John] McGinn and [Callum] McGregor were better on the ball than England midfield players but not just that, [Kieran] Tierney, [Grant] Hanley and [Scott] McTominay at the back were better on the ball passing it into midfield,” the pundit said on ITV.

“[John] Stones, [Tyrone] Mings, [Declan] Rice and Phillips struggled to get that build-up play right last night.

“Gilmour was always available, England don’t have that player. People might point at Kalvin Phillips but he is not as good on the ball, at accepting the ball, as Gilmour. Technically, he’s a little bit better.”

Not at all Gary

England were below par generally, with only goalkeeper Jordan Pickford impressing with his saves.

The outfield players were not able to live up to expectations given the opponents they faced, and there is no need to throw Phillips under the bus.

The Leeds stalwart remains a key player for Gareth Southgate’s side and is expected to retain his spot for the last group game against the Czech Republic.

While Gilmour had a better game and deservedly won the man-of-the-match award, claiming that he is better than Phillips in terms of technical ability based on just one performance is laughable.

The Leeds star will walk into Chelsea’s starting XI, and his Scotland counterpart has struggled to play regularly for both club and country for a reason.

Gilmour is a massive player, no doubt, but we do not agree with Neville’s assessment concerning Phillips.

Whites head coach Marcelo Bielsa will likely disagree with the Sky Sports pundit too, and we are eagerly looking forward to the midfielder’s next performance.
