Fulham join Leeds United in race for PSV attacker Cody Gakpo
Leeds United can reportedly secure the services of PSV attacker Cody Gakpo for a discounted fee with Manchester United pulling out of the race.
According to the Daily Mail, Fulham have shown an interest in signing the Dutch attacker along with Arsenal, Southampton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett reported that a £21million bid for Gakpo was rejected with them looking for £25million.
This is £15million lesser than what they were holding out for when Champions League qualification was attainable. [Mirror]
Go for it
Leeds need to sign an attacker before the transfer deadline and rather for going for players like Hwang Hee-chan, they must pursue Gakpo.
If Southampton are confident enough to sign him, the Whites are in the same category of clubs and actually have more money to spend after selling Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.
While Gakpo is a wide forward, he has been likened to Robin van Persie and can play down the middle as well – something Jesse Marsch and Leeds would be looking for in the coming days.
At that price range, he is certainly affordable and the fact that he’s only 23 means that he has a high resale value as well.
The fact that clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing him suggests that he’s an attacker on the rise and it’ll be a massive coup if Leeds can sign him.
It’s time for Victor Orta and Marsch to work on this move as it will not be hard to justify why they’re willing to shell out £25million to sign him.
