FA reverse referee decision after controversy in Leeds United win v Wolves

Matheus Nunes has seen his three-match ban overturned after the Wolves midfielder was shown a red card during the Premier League clash against Leeds United, according to The Athletic.

Javi Gracia’s side ran out 4-2 winners in what was a hotly contested fixture at Molineux on Saturday afternoon (18 March).

The Portuguese midfielder was sent off in stoppage time by referee Michael Salsbury, despite the 24-year-old being an unused substitute.

However, The Athletic report (21 March) the ban for violent conduct has been overturned after a claim of wrongful dismissal was lodged by Wolves.

It’s believed Julen Lopetegui’s men felt the midfielder had accidentally collided with the linesman, as opposed to actively engaging in contact with the official.

No surprise

This doesn’t come as a surprise. The home side were incensed with the decision and it’s probably the right call to reverse the initial ban. It was a fiery game in the Black Country and Gracia’s side just about got over the line. Considering they had a 3-0 lead it shouldn’t have been so nerve-wracking, but they got the job done and that’s all that matters.

Performances are not a concern during the run-in. It’s all about results and the Spaniard is slowly turning the ship around. The international break has come at a good time with Leeds now out of the relegation zone and in 14th position.

There are a number of first-team players on national team duty, but Gracia now has two weeks away from the pressures of top-flight football to implement more of his ideas across to his players.

It’s been a whirlwind start to life for the 52-year-old and with a trip to Arsenal on the horizon, things aren’t going to get any easier.
