ESPN moot Kalvin Phillips to Liverpool transfer
Leeds United stalwart Kalvin Phillips was the star of the game as England kicked off their European Championship campaign with a win.
The Three Lions secured a 1-0 victory over Croatia on Sunday, with the Whites midfielder assisting the goal and putting in a top shift in the middle of the park.
His performances would have caught the eyes of the big boys, and Liverpool hero Steve Nicol was asked on ESPN whether Phillips could be the perfect replacement for the outgone Georginio Wijnaldum.
“No. I think Phillips, if he is going to replace anybody, Phillips would replace Fabinho” he replied.
“He did well, he broke forward, he did play a great pass to Sterling but that’s not his game, that’s not how he plays with Leeds, that’s not what he’s used to doing.
“So that wouldn’t be his job if he was to replace anybody in the Liverpool midfield.”
ESPN are being disrespectful to Leeds in our opinion, and their question would definitely get the fans fuming.
Phillips is not going anywhere, so there is no need for them to start mooting a potential exit.
Liverpool are the bigger club right now, but that does not mean the England international will be keen to join them.
Reds captain Jordan Henderson has already lost his place in the England starting XI to the Leeds star as it seems, and he would not be particularly pleased with that question from ESPN either.
We are aiming to become top-flight giants once again, and there is no way we would be looking to cash out on one of our best players.
Gone are the days when Leeds were a selling club.
The Elland Road outfit want to start attracting the best players again, and last summer was proof that such is possible.
Phillips will be getting linked to a lot of clubs in the coming weeks, and we guess we have to get used to those speculations this summer given the sort of terrific player we have on our hands.
