Erik ten Hag has £120m at Man United for Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice priced out

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will be handed a £120million transfer budget as they target Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, The Times reports.

The Red Devils are reportedly considering a move for the England midfielder as his Three Lions colleague Declan Rice’s £150million price tag has put them off.

The West Ham midfielder was long-considered the favourite to sign at Old Trafford, but looks to have been priced out of a move, causing the club to turn their attentions to Elland Road.

The Times report says: “Although the United hierarchy do not agree with [Ralf] Rangnick’s statement that up to ten players could arrive this summer, there is an admission within the club that certain areas of the squad need to be strengthened.

“Ten Hag will therefore be given about £120 million to spend on new signings. The transfer budget will be increased if the club manage to sell any more players this summer.

“United retain an interest in Declan Rice, the West Ham United midfielder, but have been put off by the £150 million asking price. Kalvin Phillips, the 26-year-old Leeds midfielder, is viewed as a possible alternative.”

Price range

David Moyes’ strategy appears to be working in scaring off potential suitors for Rice.

After the Hammers failed to strengthen in January it seemed like their midfielder was sure to head to a Premier League giant.

But after pushing the 23-year-old’s price from £100million to £150million, the decision-makers in Manchester appear to not have the appetite for a fight.

The Whites could use the same tactic to warn people off their own international star, but with the new contract that has long been mooted still not sorted there remains doubt over how secure Phillips’ future is at the club.

Although The Sun recently reported that the boyhood Leeds fan was “more determined than ever” to secure his future at the club, it has yet to happen.

And it hasn’t put off clubs circling for his signature, with Man United apparently at the front of a queue that includes Aston Villa and West Ham.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Ralf Rangnick’s side were “confident” of beating the competition, while The Times had previously reported Villa were preparing a £60million bid and an “enormous salary” to land the 26-year-old.

A concerning amount of factors are currently pointing at a rush for him in the summer unless a new deal finally materialises.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has shared the likelihood the club will make another attempt to sign one of this season’s break-out stars.
