Phil Hay shares if Leeds United will try again for Conor Gallagher ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Leeds United won’t make another attempt to sign Crystal Palace loan star Connor Gallagher in the summer according to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay.

The Whites wanted to take the Chelsea midfielder on loan ahead of this season but eventually lost out to the Eagles where he has been a major success, and will now face him on Monday night (25 April).

Early in the season Hay had suggested that revisiting a deal for the 22-year-old might be possible due to Marcelo Bielsa’s habit of not letting go of targets (The Athletic), as he did with Dan James, but with the Argentine now gone he no longer sees it.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show he said: “I must confess, my feeling was he was a decent enough player to be going for [last summer], but I didn’t look at him and think that is the signing that would drive the season in the way that it kind of has for Palace, but it just goes to show.

“I have to say I wouldn’t object at all, I don’t think Leeds will go back for him this summer, but I wouldn’t object at all if they did.”

What might have been

The season could have been so different had Gallagher decided to move to Elland Road instead of Selhurst Park.

He has turned out to be the star man in south London, and will likely be in contention to break into the European champions’ first team when he returns to Stamford Bridge.

After impressing at West Brom previously he has made the step up in some style, to the tune of 33 appearances in all competitions, as well as eight goals and five assists.

He will have no shortage of suitors if he is available in the summer but it appears United have moved on for now.

The club look to be all in on Red Bull Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson, having failed to land him in January.

Fabrizio Romano told Que Golazo last month that it was “good news for Leeds fans” on the prospect of Victor Orta securing his man in the summer if the club avoids relegation.

So, barring a surprise development it looks like the Gallagher ship has sailed.

In other Leeds United news, one mooted transfer target has reacted to reports he is in line to replace Kalvin Phillips at the club.
