'Electric' Dan James leads the way for 'more measured' Leeds vs Leicester
BT Sport commentary duo Darren Fletcher and Lucy Ward were impressed by the first-half performance of Daniel James against Leicester, labelling the Leeds star ‘electric’.
The Whites started the game at the King Power Stadium in bright fashion in the first match under new manager Jesse Marsch, with James occupying a striker role throughout the opening 45 minutes.
After a good counter-attacking run in the game in which he fed Jack Harrison to get a shot off that was saved by Schmeichel, after going close himself in the opening minutes, which led to the BT sport team praising him.
“This run from Dan James, he was electric,” Fletcher said.
“We saw him against Villa a couple of weeks ago, he was pretty good in that number 9 position,” Ward added.
“Set up Jack Harrison there, but they’re a bit more measured Leeds. They’re still playing with energy, the counters are more measured and not quite as wild. Which we probably would have expected.”
It was a fun start to the game for Leeds fans, who saw their team performing with high intensity and energy as usual but also more structured in defence.
They seemed to operate in a 4-2-2-2 shape off the ball and pressed high, with James leading the press with his lightning pace.
But it was his offering in attack which would have been a positive in the opening half, with his pace in behind stretching the Leicester defence and causing problems throughout.
He made the right decisions too and was unlucky not to get a goal when he dragged his shot wide, but also not to get an assist when Harrison was put through in the box.
It was encouraging that Leeds’ record signing looked bright in the new system, although it’s very early doors, and fans will hope to see more of that as the season continues.
