Dr Dan: Leeds United capitalised on Premier League TV revenue after promotion
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Leeds United have been making the most of the Premier League broadcasting revenue since their promotion last summer.
That’s according to Dr Dan Plumlely who believes that’s the main reason for Leeds to be ahead of clubs like Roma and Borussia Dortmund in revenues for the 2020/21 season.
Deloitte Money League released their numbers for the last campaign, as relayed by Swiss Ramble on Twitter.
Here, the Whites are in 23rd place compared to all teams in Europe with revenues of £171million.
They also find themselves ahead of a majority of Premier League clubs in what was a profitable year for them.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the Sheffield Hallam University expert said, “This shows what Premier League TV cash can do to a club’s revenue and most of the increase Leeds have seen is because of that.
“Clubs like Roma and Dortmund are close to the top of their leagues and are fighting for Europe, but that’s what Premier League TV cash can do. It is significant for Leeds.”
The Whites are currently fighting to secure their Premier League status for next season.
As things stand, they have the odds stacked against them with fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.
