Dominic Matteo has claimed that Leeds United duo Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas are the two most improved players in the country.

The former Whites defender was blown away by the 3-0 victory against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Friday.

Patrick Bamford scored a hattrick at Villa Park, but it wasn’t the striker who caught the eye of Matteo as Leeds entered the top-four.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Matteo was blown away by the performance of his former side against the in-form Villa.

“I got goosebumps watching that on Friday,” he wrote.

“It was the best Leeds performance I’ve seen in nearly 20 years. Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas are the two most improved players in this country.”

Ayling and Dallas were both forced to switch positions as Marcelo Bielsa had to reshuffle his defence due to the injury crisis at Elland Road.

Despite those problems, Leeds still managed to keep a clean sheet against the only unbeaten side in the league at the time.

Matteo has a point

Take a look back at when the duo first arrived at Elland Road and compare it to now.

Dallas joined the Whites from Brentford and classed himself as a winger at that time. As time progressed he slowly moved further back and has become Bielsa’s utility man he can rely on.

As for Ayling, he may be one of the best bargain signings in recent years, arriving for only £250,000 from Bristol City – who didn’t want him at the time.

The 29-year-old duo are both in the top five performers according to WhoScored this season, with Dallas making more tackles than any other player in the squad.

Ayling has stepped up as a leader at Elland Road and is the man to step forward and take the brunt of everything when it isn’t going our way.

The defensive duo have become indispensable in West Yorkshire, and both are key to any success this season in the Premier League.
