Rodrigo De Paul to Leeds United is the transfer saga that just won’t go away.

It resurfaced again on the eve of the January transfer deadline when South American and European football expert Andy Brassell said on talkSPORT that a move to Leeds in the summer was inevitable.

Talking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast, host Dan Moylan said, “Will we finally get him? Because Andy Brassell was talking on talkSPORT, who’s a South American football expert, and he seems to think we will.”

Phil Hay replied, “He knows his stuff does Andy and he’s good on European football in general.

“I think what he was saying refers to the fact that De Paul definitely, definitely wants to come here. We know that from speaking to people close to him. He hasn’t hidden it much.

“I’d love to know what the Udinese fan base thinks but perhaps they’re relaxed knowing that a player that good will eventually leave.

“Leeds didn’t act on De Paul in the way I would have expected them to [last summer].

“Whether or not they come back round this time I just don’t know. But they need a player like that and I think he would be a good fit.”

Udinese

On fire in Serie A

De Paul isn’t a player Leeds were linked with who has gone on to play poorly, like Michael Cuisance.

He’s had a brilliant season with Udinese and is regularly on top of the metrics.

Opta has De Paul in the strongest Serie A line-up of 2020 and he was also included in WhoScored’s Serie A Team of the Year so it’s not about his quality as a player.

Leeds really do need a player in his position too, which makes the fact they didn’t move for him last summer a bit odd.

However, Leeds spent over £100m and De Paul might have been one too many after bringing in players like Rodrigo and Raphinha.

Leeds were never going to do big business in the January window and that means that, for all we know, De Paul could be on the top of their summer hitlist.

We would definitely like to see it happen.
