Dean Windass expects Leeds United to struggle
Lack of pace in the Leeds United defence will prove costly in the future, claims Dean Windass.
The Whites have not started the new season strongly and find themselves at the wrong end of the table.
They’ve still not won a game despite coming close on a couple of occasions, which has led to disgruntlement among the fanbase.
Speaking to Football FanCast, Windass, who is a former Premier League player, said, “I just think that you’re in the Premier League now and the two centre-halves for Leeds United, I’m not being disrespectful but the trouble is, if you don’t have pace at the back in the Premier League, you’re going to struggle.”
Given the style of football Leeds play, they do need someone quick and tall in their defence and right now, they do not have that commanding presence.
Liam Cooper’s performances have declined and nobody has quite stepped up to become an undisputed option at centre-back.
Kalvin Phillips has also often dropped deep to form a back three and we’ve seen Luke Ayling also deputise there on several occasions.
While one can see the tactical reasoning behind these decisions, it’s clear for all that it’s not working.
Hopefully, Bielsa has a plan in mind as he cannot afford to see his side drop so many points.
Expecting an improvement from last season seems highly unrealistic and even mid-table is looking like a decent outcome to this campaign, given how poorly it’s started for the Yorkshire outfit.
