Dean Ashton 'can't believe' one thing he saw from Leeds in win v West Brom

talkSPORT pundit Dean Ashton has said he “can’t believe” the fitness of the Leeds United players after their 5-0 win against West Brom.

He had plenty more praise about how Leeds demolished the Baggies but said that if you stripped away the movement and finishing, the work-rate would make other fans – and players from other clubs – jealous.

Ashton was talking on the Drive show on talkSPORT on Wednesday evening.

“If you put a structure in place for players… and confidence and belief it’s amazing how far players will get you,” Ashton said.

“They [Leeds] are a joy to watch… What’s the one thing I always hear from supporters is, ‘If our team has a right go I’ll be okay with that.’

“I can’t believe the fitness levels these players are at.

“That’s the bare minimum, take away that [against West Brom] I thought their passing and movement was sensational, clinical in their finishing.

“Take that away and start with the basics, their work-rate is incredible. They’re doing it week-in, week-out, he’s not rotating… that work-rate is incredible.

“It’s probably making other fans and players at other clubs think, ‘Why can’t we be at that level?'”

Ashton is spot on

After the furore on Twitter the past couple of days it’s refreshing to get back to talking about Leeds and how good they were at The Hawthorns.

This was a West Brom side that had just taken a point against Liverpool with Sam Allardyce’s tactics being praised.

They came a cropper against a Leeds side that was simply irresistible.

Ashton is a pundit who’s got it spot on about Leeds. The fitness and the work-rate is incredible.

No one will say that the Leeds squad is the best in the league. However, it is the fittest and like Ashton says, these players play week-in, week-out.

Looking at how fit Bielsa gets his players, you could say it’s almost negligent that other managers don’t do the same.

In a world where a 1% or 2% edge could mean the difference between relegation and survival, there’s surely no excuse for having players anything but 100% fit.
