David Prutton: Leeds set to lose 'vital' Gaetano Berardi next month
David Prutton has labelled Gaetano Berardi as a “vital” player despite him leaving Leeds United in the next month.
The Swiss warrior will be moving on from Elland Road once his deal expires, and he was given the perfect farewell in that final day victory over West Brom.
Sky Sports pundit, Prutton has insisted that despite hardly featuring, Marcelo Bielsa will have relied on Berardi massively throughout his time at the club.
Writing in his Yorkshire Evening Post column, Prutton admitted that the Whites are set to lose one of their most reliable players.
“Gaetano Berardi, you would say possibly less so but the comparison is the thief of joy as what Gaetano has done on his own terms has been vital to Leeds moving forward and getting back into the Premier League,” he said.
“You have obviously got to look at the volume of minutes and games played and that comes into it as well.
“But Berardi managed to work himself into a reliable footsoldier when it came to how Marcelo wanted to use him.”
Berardi may not have been the greatest of players to ever step foot on Elland Road, but he certainly may have been the most committed.
No one could argue that the warrior would put his body on the line for the Whites, just as he did in the past year after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.
Bielsa has managed the best, and even he was left hugging Berardi after he was replaced against the Baggies, as nearly 10,000 fans chanted his name.
Pablo Hernandez is another who will go down in history, although there will be a bigger urge to replace him than Berardi.
Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk, Robin Koch and Diego Llorente mean that we should be more than covered at the heart of the defence, thank you for everything Berra.
