David Norris: Leeds United should have signed Harry Winks

Leeds United should have signed Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks, claims former Whites player David Norris.

The Yorkshire outfit were in pursuit of a midfielder all summer and even explored possibilities to sign one 12 months ago.

However, on both occasions they failed in their pursuits to get one over the line.

This summer, per The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Winks was offered to Spurs on loan, and Norris believes he should’ve been signed by his former club.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said, “I think so yeah, he’s a quality player and we’ve said before that Leeds need a little bit more back-up in that area and with what he’s done at Spurs I would have thought that would have been a good fit, a good move.”

Good opportunity

Signing Winks was a good opportunity for Leeds to add to their depth in midfield, having not signed one since last summer.

With Pablo Hernandez’s exit, the need to sign one was amplified further and a temporary move for someone of Winks’ calibre wouldn’t have been the worst move.

We’ve all seen glimpses of his quality, especially under Mauricio Pochettino.

He’s taken on teams like Barcelona at Nou Camp in the Champions League and put in a midfield clinic on the night.

Of late, his impact has certainly diminished but he could have have added something to this Whites side.

Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta may go on to rue this decision in the coming months once injuries start kicking in.
