David Anderson: ‘Top sides’ other than Barcelona made approaches to Leeds United for Raphinha

Leeds United have “received inquiries” from multiple “top sides” for Raphinha as his Barcelona saga drags on, reports The Mirror’s David Anderson.

The Catalan giants appeared to have muscled their way to the front of the queue for the Whites’ Brazilian star, but other major suitors look to be undeterred, in addition to four Premier League rivals who are interested.

Anderson has also reported that the Blaugrana are well short of United’s asking price, said to be almost £67million, so other clubs could steal in if they stump up the cash.

He writes in The Mirror today (29 March): Leeds have also received inquiries about Raphinha from a number of top sides and West Ham claim they made an offer in January, while Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City have shown interest previously.

“Leeds are relaxed about Raphinha’s situation because the Samba star is settled at Elland Road and is not agitating for a move this summer.”

Bidding war

If he has to go this is the most positive news on the situation, as it blows Barcelona’s attempts to strong-arm the club out of the water.

With the wide confirmation that there is no release clause in the player’s current contract, somebody is going to have to pay what the club wants.

The 25-year-old may even still be a Whites player at the start of next season at this rate.

It would certainly suit Victor Orta to have his man perform at the World Cup in November if he can bump the price up afterwards.

While Barcelona, and Deco, look to be doing all they can to force the deal through sooner rather than later, the club hold the cards.

As long as they secure safety in the Premier League, at worst they can set a price for the winger.

A bidding war for his services would be beneficial if a summer move cannot be avoided, and if top sides are already queued up that is very possible.

Jesse Marsch just has to complete the survival job and then the ball is in the club’s court.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay believes a long-serving Marcelo Bielsa favourite is in line to be replaced this summer.
