Phil Hay: Leeds United could replace Luke Ayling in the summer

Luke Ayling’s Leeds United future could be in doubt as he is one of a few players who will be considered for replacement in the summer, says Phil Hay.

In the absence of injured captain Liam Cooper the right-back has captained the team this year, and was instrumental in the comeback against Wolves in the previous match.

But with a major overhaul likely when the season finishes under new boss Jesse Marsch, the 30-year-old could suffer the fall out from a rough campaign.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, The Athletic man said: “I’m pleased for him [after Wolves] because he hasn’t had a particularly great season and I think, like with a few others, he’s probably going to come under consideration now about what needs to happen in the summer.

“He’s had two really good games, particularly the back end of the Wolves game; really, really influential.

“But there is going to now be that consideration in the summer of ‘what do we do with the squad?’

“On the basis of this season, using cold hard facts, what needs to change?

“He has given everything to this last four years, whatever you think about form.”

Harsh reality

It was going to happen sooner or later despite Ayling’s status a key figure in the club’s rise under Marcelo Bielsa.

But the departure of the influential Argentine leaves a number of his most trusted men open to reassessment.

The dreadful fortunes of this season will have forced Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta to look at various ways to avoid a repeat.

According to Wales Online Cody Drameh has been “showcasing a freakish talent” on loan at Cardiff City this year.

Leeds Live‘s Beren Cross reports that the youngster will seek assurances over playing time if he is to stay at Elland Road next season, but he could be in line for a promotion.

Whether he represents a clear upgrade on Ayling at Premier League level is uncertain.

But with significant cash likely to be available if a star like Raphinha leaves there would be plenty of funding to bring in a new right-back in the transfer market.

In other Leeds United news, another key Whites figure has been tipped to be gone within the next three seasons.
