Data analyst compares Leeds star to Messi as stat shows him crushing the Championship

Pablo Hernandez has had a new lease of life at Leeds United.

The standout player from last season is starting to hit peak form in a central role, with Helder Costa playing out wide.

He’s scored three goals and added four assists in the Championship this season but he’s absolutely crushing the league when it comes to progressive passes and runs.

Data analyst Michael Caley highlighted a graph that shows Hernandez monstering the competition in the Championship.

He heads a group of players that also includes Mateusz Klich and Jack Harrison.

It led Caley to compare Hernandez to Messi, saying, “A bunch of interesting young players here and also Pablo Hernandez is still on some Messi shit in the Championship.”

Progressive passes are defined as ones that, “move the attack forward 10 yards from its furthest point of progression in the last six passes, or into the penalty area, which begin at least at x=40 on a 100x length pitch.”

Hernandez has been rewarded for his form at Leeds with a two-year extension to his contract that will see him stay at Elland Road until 2022.

His old deal had an option for an extra year if Leeds got promoted but now he will stay regardless.

Hernandez is expected to play in the central attacking role again in the game against Fulham on Saturday.

Leeds will take a big step towards the Premier League with a win. It would put them 15 points ahead of Fulham at the midway point of the season.
