Daniel Farke won’t hesitate to axe Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville at Leeds United

Daniel Farke will not hesitate to drop Leeds United young stars Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville if their heads seem turned, according to a report in the Irish Daily Mail [Page 52, 30 June].

The report references Farke’s time at Norwich City, where key players Todd Cantwell and Emiliano Buendia were widely expected to leave the club and were clearly distracted, so the manager opted to leave them out of the team despite their importance.

The Leeds United stars, aged 19 and 21 respectively, have been heavily linked to moves away in the summer transfer window following Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, picking up interest both from Premier League clubs and abroad.

Farke needs to stamp his authority

This is likely to be a turbulent transfer window for Leeds, as is often the case when a squad with so many star names finds itself in the second division. Clubs are circling like vultures around their best players, with their young wingers garnering particular levels of attention.

It will be important for the new manager to make his authority clear early on, to give them some stability amongst the turmoil that can be caused by transfer rumours, as well as the ownership issue and dragged out attempts to bring him to the club.

Gnonto has been linked to Champions League clubs Inter Milan, Arsenal and Manchester City, while Summerville has had interest from abroad with former Leeds director of football Victor Orta keen to bring him to Seville.

The players who don’t want to play for Leeds, shouldn’t. It’s a simple sentiment but can often go amiss in football, with players ability and value to the team overruling their desires. A united and happy squad will be key to getting out of the Championship this season.
