'Critical' – Leeds chief delivers major Jean-Kevin Augustin fitness update

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear has said that the Leeds United staff are working flat-out to ensure Jean-Kevin Augustin can play a ‘critical part’ when the 19/20 season resumes.

However, Kinnear thinks the season re-start will come too soon for Adam Forshaw, who is targeting an August return after a serious hip injury.

Writing in his alternative program notes in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Kinnear said, “On the injury front, our medical team are focusing on ensuring Jean Kevin Augustin is back to full fitness for the return to play.

There is a belief throughout the club that he will have a critical part to play in the run-in and I know JKA is desperate to demonstrate why the club have put so much faith in him.

“The resumption in play will probably come too soon for Adam Forshaw, but we are confident that this break means the root cause of his injury issues will have been resolved.”

This update is fascinating and it represents a real shift in tone around Augustin.

The new striker has definitely not set Elland Road alight since he joined but the word “critical” is a new one for Augustin and the current Leeds team.

There was a thinking that this break could play into his hands if he applied himself and it sounds like the striker will play a part in helping Leeds to secure promotion when the season re-starts.

It was always going to be a stretch for Forshaw.

He hasn’t played since September and only finished the last part of his surgery for his hip injury a couple of weeks ago.

He’s going to need plenty of time on the grass to get anywhere near match fit and that’s not happening at the moment with the squad in lockdown.

It looks like Forshaw will be back next season and, hopefully, Augustin will have fired Leeds into the Premier League by then.
