Commentator blasts Gabby Agbonlahor as insult aimed at new Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch

American commentator Maximiliano Bretos has blasted Gabby Agbonlahor for comparing new Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch to fictional character Ted Lasso.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 6 March after Leeds’ defeat at Leicester, Agbonlahor took a swipe at Marsch for organising a post-match huddle with his players on the pitch at the King Power Stadium.

Agbonlahor dubbed the footage of Marsch’s huddle as cringeworthy and mentioned American TV character Lasso.

Bretos, who describes himself as the voice of LAFC in the MLS, hates that Lasso’s name is being used as a way to look down on American managers like Marsch.

“This is so tired, it’s clearly not changing and now there is a moniker ‘Ted Lasso’ to ridicule with,” wrote Bretos via his personal Twitter account on Monday [7 March].

Small-minded

Oh look, it’s an American “soccer” coach so let’s dumb everything down, copy their accent, mock their choice of words and call them Ted Lasso.

Hahaha, so original.

Marsch is American and you can bet he’s proud of it.

The snobbery in English football towards football in the States is stupid.

No, it’s not their biggest sport and yes, they do use different words to what we do and have their own American take on things.

But wouldn’t football be boring if everyone did the exact same thing, have the exact same league format and play the same exact way across the world?

Americans do some things differently.

In our opinion, the lack of promotion and relegation to and from the MLS is a bad thing but they do so many things right over there.

Pay caps, their stadiums, their branding, their outlook on transfers and their overall in-stadium experience is better than what we have over here.

Celebrate their differences.

Not every manager is like Marcelo Bielsa, not every manager is like Marsch and not every manager is the same as the lot Agbonlahor did in his time as a player for Aston Villa.

In other Leeds United news, Richard Key and Andy Gray were baffled by this footage of Marsch at the weekend.
