Oldham boss Harry Kewell has explained why Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont missed out on Latics’ matchday squad against Newport.
Many Oldham fans were furious that McCalmont was left out of Saturday’s squad as some hailed him as the club’s best midfielder.
Speaking after the game against Newport, Kewell explained that the loanee had picked up a knock and this was the reason for his absence.
He is quoted by The Oldham Times as saying, “Alfie just picked up a slight, little thing but he’ll be alright for Cheltenham.”
The club initially said that McCalmont missed out on the squad as Latics are only allowed five loanees in the matchday squad with McCalmont the sixth man on Saturday.
Luckily, for Oldham’s sake, McCalmont’s absence wasn’t felt on the pitch as Latics secured a 3-2 win over a 10 man Newport County.
In a way, it is better than McCalmont has picked up an injury as it suggests that he was forced to miss Saturday’s game rather than being dropped.
Rather than missing out due to his ability, McCalmont looks set to return on Tuesday in what could be a difficult game for Latics as they face a Cheltenham side that defied expectations in Saturday’s FA Cup loss to Manchester City.
It was feared that the 20-year-old’s development may stagnate if he stopped being selected for Oldham but this is not the case.
The midfielder no doubt has a bright future after impressing on loan this season and a big performance in the back end of the campaign will do McCalmont the world of good.
Hopefully, we will see more from the youngster once he is reinstated to Oldham’s starting 11.
However, should the midfielder continue to miss out, Leeds will be asking questions of Kewell as he mishandles one of our young talents.
In other Leeds United news, a rock star has backed the Whites to be unstoppable later this season.
