Clinton Morrison stunned by 'outstanding' Illan Meslier in Leeds United draw v Newcastle
Clinton Morrison was left stunned by Illan Meslier after the Leeds United keeper produced an “outstanding” save to deny Fabian Schar in the Whites’ draw with Newcastle United.
The 22-year-old produced a string of fine saves to deny the in-form Magpies and earn a valuable point for Jesse Marsch’s men.
Morrison was particularly impressed with the Frenchman’s save from Schar in the second half after a corner from Trippier.
“There’s a ball in from Trippier and it’s a free header for Schar and the save from Meslier is outstanding,” said the Sky Sports pundit (Sky Sports News, 16:25, 31 December).
This could well be a big point come the end of the season for the Whites with Newcastle certainly amongst the best teams in the Premier League this season. Fans will be pleased with the defensive performance, with a number of players standing up to wave after wave of attacks from the home side.
It’s now up to Marsch to find a balance between being solid defensively and a threat going forward. His side were fairly ineffectual in an attacking sense in the North East and the American will be looking for more impetus from his side heading into a vital fixture against West Ham United at Elland Road.
The Irons have endured a torrid start to the season and currently sit below Leeds. Marsch’s side also have a game in hand on David Moyes’ men which means a win could prove to be vital in their Premier League survival bid.
West Ham losing to Brentford was positive for Leeds, but Everton gaining an unlikely point at Manchester City will certainly provide some disappointment.
