Chris Sutton thrilled by Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips

Chris Sutton has been blown away by Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for club and country over the past season.

England open their EUROs on Sunday afternoon against Croatia at Wembley, and the Yorkshire Pirlo has been heavily tipped to start.

Sutton has picked Phillips in his predicted starting XI, after what was a shining year for him in the Premier League.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Sutton was clearly thrilled with what he has seen from Phillips over the past season at Elland Road.

“He’s had a terrific season for Leeds,” he said.

“Big call from Southgate to play two holding midfielders. All-action, combative and uses the ball well.”

Unreal.

Watching Phillips walkout at Wembley tomorrow would be a huge moment for him, the club and everyone involved.

It would be the first time a Leeds player has lined up for the Three Lions at a major tournament in almost two decades.

One thing it would be though is totally deserved.

People speak about how Declan Rice is a guarantee in midfield, but when you compare the two via WhoScored, Phillips has more tackles, clearances and considerably more key passes.

This would be a brilliant partnership in midfield, and there won’t be many tougher tasks than keeping the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic quiet on Sunday.

Sutton is clearly blown away, and his vote is going to Phillips starting tomorrow, and we have everything crossed that Southgate feels the same.

The Three Lions boss always says he will pick his sides on form, and tomorrow is the perfect chance to prove that it isn’t all rubbish.
