Chris Sutton shares Leeds United automatic promotion verdict, predicts FA Cup scoreline v Plymouth

Chris Sutton has predicted that Leeds United will extend their winning run in all competitions to six matches when they face Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup on Saturday 27 January.

The BBC Sport pundit believes that the Whites will be able to build upon their 1-0 win over Norwich City last time out and maintain their unbeaten record at Elland Road, predicting that Daniel Farke’s side will come away 2-0 winners.

While Sutton believes that Leeds’ focus will remain on the promotion race in the Championship which they’re “right in the mix” for, he thinks that they will have more than enough quality in their side to get the job done on Saturday.

Writing in BBC Sport FA Cup predictions (25 January) he said: “It’s pretty clear who are the favourites here – Leeds haven’t lost at home all season, while Plymouth haven’t won away.

“Leeds needed an added-time penalty to beat Preston on Sunday but it was the right decision. I am a big fan of their manager Daniel Farke, who did really good things at Norwich, and they are right in the mix now for automatic promotion.

“That is obviously their main aim this season but it would be great to see them have a real go at the FA Cup too. They beat Plymouth at Elland Road in November and, if they can repeat that result on Saturday, no one will want to go there in round five.

“Argyle will carry a threat – they have got Morgan Whittaker, who is a really talented attacker – but I am going to say Leeds will get the job done.”

Get the job done

Leeds United have shown this season that they’re incredibly tough to beat, particularly at Elland Road and they are likely to demonstrate the same characteristics in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Plymouth have a couple of exciting players and are a very different side than the one that the Whites faced earlier this season under Steven Schumacher, but Leeds should be looking at this tie and expecting to book their place in the fifth round.

It’s never that easy, especially in a knockout competition, but the Whites showed in their win over Norwich that they’re capable of doing the ugly work to attempt to grind out three points when required.

Hopefully, they’ll match Sutton’s prediction and comfortably book their place in the next round before attentions quickly turn back to the Championship with a trip to Bristol City on the horizon.
