Chris Sutton outwitted by Leeds fan after he attempts to undermine Marcelo Bielsa

Chris Sutton attempted to put down Marcelo Bielsa on BBC 5 Live’s 606 but one Leeds United fan put him in his place.

The discussion took place following a Southampton fan calling about his side’s good spell under Mauricio Pochettino, with the Whites supporter then phoning in to explain it was Bielsa who nurtured both Pochettino and Pep Guardiola.

Sutton quickly hit back, questioning the Argentine’s track record in winning trophies, completely missing the point according to the Leeds fan.

“He is God, Bielsa, and then you’ve got the disciples who are Guardiola and Pochettino, that’s where the good football comes from, and Leeds have showed that this season,” said the Whites fan on BBC 5 Live’s 606.

Sutton then hit back, “I sort of understand where you’re coming from and Pep looks up to him doesn’t he…but what has Bielsa ever won?”

However, the Leeds supporter was not having Sutton’s argument and quickly shut him down with a line that Sutton could not counter.

He added, “It’s not about winning things, Bielsa is a coach who makes players better.

“I think the sentiment with Leeds fans is that Bielsa will be held close to the hearts of lots of Leeds fans forever because of what he’s done to our club.”

Silencing Sutton

Bielsa has transformed Leeds so it was pretty careless of Sutton to dismiss his achievements.

There is a reason why he is so widely regarded in the game and just because he has not won the trophies of Guardiola it does not mean he is not a top manager.

The Leeds fan was right to point out that Bielsa is a coach who nurtures players and makes them better – just look at the form of Stuart Dallas and Patrick Bamford this season.

Even Raphinha has improved and is now more productive in the final third.

The Brazilian’s six goals and six assists are the most goal contributions he has ever made in a single campaign in a European league, and he is only getting better.

The same can be said of most of the squad, and we continue our trajectory under Bielsa it may not be long until we are winning trophies.

That should silence the doubters once and for all, though Bielsa already deserves more credit than he is getting.
