Charlie Cresswell ready to quit Leeds United for good amid Sunderland and Ipswich transfer development

Charlie Cresswell is ready to exit Leeds United on a permanent transfer amid interest from Sunderland and Ipswich Town, according to Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper reported [30 December, page 72] that the 21-year-old is open to a move away from Elland Road, as he continues to consider his future at the club, becoming an outcast under Daniel Farke.

It is understood that Ipswich are the newest club to join the queue for the England Under 21 international, with Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Southampton and Rangers all aiming for the youngster's signature on loan or in a permanent deal.

Tough decisions

Having experienced a successful loan out at Millwall last season, playing 30 games across all competitions and scoring four goals, Cresswell signed a new four-year deal with the Whites but has since slipped down the pecking order at Elland Road.

It has been disappointing to see the Leeds academy graduate slip under the radar this season, making just six appearances under Farke. However, there is clearly a reason for him being overlooked.

It is fair to assume that the centre-back is unlikely to replace Joe Rodon or Pascal Struijk in the defensive partnership, and with the experienced Liam Cooper to call upon, Cresswell has barely had a look-in.

However, it could seem like a silly decision to let the youngster go permanently, with Rodon's future up in the air. The Welshman is only on loan at the club from Tottenham Hotspur and may not return to Elland Road if the asking price is too high.

This would be the perfect opportunity for Cresswell to get into Farke's plans but that may have to wait until next season. Meanwhile, a loan move to one of the aforementioned clubs would be ideal to keep the young defender happy.

Although, Leeds would likely prefer a loan move involving a non-fellow promotion hopeful in the Championship.
