Charlie Austin accuses England of 'Snobbery' over Leeds star Patrick Bamford

Charlie Austin has taken a huge swipe at England manager Gareth Southgate for not picking Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford in his recent squads.

Bamford, 27, has been in electric form for the Whites this season, scoring 16 Premier League goals to fire the West Yorkshire side to a top-10 finish in their first campaign back in the top-tier after a 16-year absence.

But that’s not been enough to earn him a spot in any of Southgate’s squads so far and he faces a herculean task to force his way in for the European Championships that begin next month.

Southgate’s stock in the country shot up rapidly after the 2018 World Cup and he was considered a national hero by many, including Robbie Savage. [Mirror]

Laura Woods broached the subject to Austin on talkSPORT Breakfast [19/05/21], as seen via their Youtube channel.

“I’m going to ask you about Patrick Bamford,” she said.

“You spoke before about snobbery in football didn’t you and when you’re talking about being picked for England and your international side and all that, Bamford has scored 16 league goals this season now.

“Harry Kane is the only Englishman who has scored more, so is there a snobbery towards Patrick Bamford because he plays for Leeds and not one of the higher teams, what do you think?”

Austin replied, “Yeah I still do believe that, what do you want?

“When you’re picking forwards what do you want, goalscorers? Please, the only person that’s scored more than him is England captain Harry Kane.

“You expect Bamford to be in there [England squad]. For me I think he almost has to go.

“He’s ticked every box to get into the Euros squad but then you look at it and go ‘it’s easier to leave him out because he plays at Leeds’, that’s poor.”

They’ll soon see…

What is it going to take for Bamford to force his way in? Leeds to be playing European football?

That shouldn’t be the case as Dominic Calvert-Lewin is now considered a fixture in the England squad despite plying his trade at Everton who haven’t been in continental action since 2017/18, and the Whites could still finish above the Merseyside outfit this season.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins also made the cut for the previous squad, and his side are now guaranteed to place below Leeds in the Premier League.

Kalvin Phillips has made his way into the national side so there’s not a complete bias against us but there are considerably less options for Southgate in the middle of midfield so his hand may have been forced there.

But Bamford deserves his chance, and with an extended squad list of 26 allowed this summer, should be in with a shot of getting in there.

It’s highly unlikely now though, and the positive is that he should be fresh and raring to go next season after a summer of rest.
