Championship star details 'biggest mistake' at Leeds after flopping at Elland Road
Swansea City midfielder Matt Grimes has been one of their standout stars this season, but that isn’t how Leeds United fans will remember him.
Grimes came to Elland Road on loan under Garry Monk, and only managed to make seven appearances in the Championship.
The 24-year-old claimed that he believed he was guaranteed to play for the Whites, something that didn’t quite work out for him.
Grimes admitted that he will never make that mistake again, as he managed to get on the wrong side of the Leeds faithful.
“But the biggest mistake I made going to Leeds, I thought, I’ve played in the Championship, I’m coming from a Premier League team to a Championship team, I know the manager, Garry Monk at the time, I’m guaranteed to play,” he said on the Konversations with Kenji podcast.
“That is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my career to date, and hopefully I don’t make another one like it.”
Grimes is now the captain of Swansea and is hoping to make a late push into the play-offs with the Welsh side once the Championship season restarts.
We remember being at Monk’s first game in charge of the club, that horrendous thrashing at Queens Park Rangers.
Grimes started that game, his only start for the club, and we were left wondering what the likes of Kalvin Phillips had done not to get ahead of the youngster who was so disappointing.
The midfielder has stepped up massively this season though, completing three tackles per game as well as over 60 passes according to WhoScored, as he continues to try and prove that disappointing spell was a one-off.
