Leeds United may have been handed a big boost in their pursuit to sign PSV attacker and Manchester United target Cody Gakpo as he crashed out of the Champions League qualifiers.
The Dutch side faced a winner takes all game against Rangers on Wednesday night with a spot in the Champions League group stages up for grabs.
Gakpo, who has been a Leeds target, said that he was likelier to stay if his team qualified for the tournament, but failure to do that may open the door for an exit.
He was quoted on August 9 as saying, “We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League.
“Then it is more likely that I will stay. I don’t think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay.
“I’m open for a cup of coffee with the management – or coffee for them and water for me. We’ll see how it goes.”
The Daily Mirror claim that PSV value the Netherlands international at £40million and Leeds are one of the teams showing an interest in the attacker likened to Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.
There was interest from Manchester United as well but they are now seeming to sign Ajax winger Antony [The Athletic] instead which means that a big spending club will now be out of the race.
With no Champions League football, he may not have as much incentive to stay there and that puts the ball in Leeds’ court who do have the money to spend this summer.
