BT Sport pundit slams Leeds United full-back Junior Firpo despite 1-0 win v Crystal Palace
Leeds United put daylight between themselves and the Premier League’s bottom three after Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.
The Whites left it late to secure all three points yesterday (30 November), but Premier League productions commentators Daniel Mann and Jim Beglin were far from impressed with Junior Firpo after a sloppy moment.
The Spanish left-back came on to replace Pascal Struijk ahead of the second half but he got booked two minutes later and looked jittery.
Beglin said: “A bit wide from Firpo, and maybe he’s still apprehensive from the weekend.”
Mann replied: “Junior Firpo not riding on the crest of the confidence wave at the moment.”
Firpo eventually got better after some minutes, but Marcelo Bielsa could have been left to rue the decision to bring him on as Struijk was withdrawn for being on a yellow card.
The former Barcelona has struggled with the demands of the Premier League, and he needs to show that the Elland Road outfit was right to bring him to England in the summer.
He endured a torrid time against Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey on Saturday, while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was also a thorn in his flesh.
Luckily for him, Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew were not able to exploit his weaknesses as his teammates helped out with the defensive work this time.
Leeds host Brentford this week, and Thomas Frank will be instructing his men to exploit the left of the Whites defence as both Struijk and Firpo have been below par.
Stiffer tests await after Sunday (5 December), and Bielsa needs to sort the position out.
In other Leeds United news, a major update on Whites January bid to sign attacker has been provided, with pen-to-paper imminent.
