Jon Newsome wowed by ‘super’ Leeds United in Championship clash vs Bristol City
Jon Newsome hailed a “super” passage of play from Leeds United during the first half of their Championship clash with Bristol City.
The move in question happened 18 minutes into Friday’s (2 February) match at Ashton Gate as Patrick Bamford was played through on goal.
Bamford could not get the better of City goalkeeper Max O’Leary, but former Leeds defender Newsome was impressed all the same.
“It’s a super move again,” Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds [2 February, 20:22]. “They miss the press out and go long.
“Then a lovely slide-rule ball into Patrick and he fires it early. Really, really good and it’ll give Leeds confidence.”
Bamford spurns chance at Ashton Gate
Leeds striker Bamford has been in great form in 2024, scoring four goals in five starts heading into this contest.
Georginio Rutter did very well to slot in Bamford and the in-form striker should have been picking a spot either side of O’Leary, rather than firing right at him.
As Newsome says, though, it was very nicely worked from Leeds to create the opening – one of a few that fell their way in a goalless opening 45 minutes.

With the likes of Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto playing just behind him, Bamford is never going to have a shortage of supplies in terms of chances created.
With Joel Piroe unable to get into the side, Bamford needs to ensure he takes the next opportunity that comes his way or else he could find himself back out of the side.
In other Leeds United news, Don Goodman has made an “absolutely massive” claim regarding the Whites.
