Beren Cross delivers update on Leeds interest in John Swift
Leeds United have been reportedly linked with a move for Reading midfielder John Swift in January.
According to reports from The Star, the Whites are considering a bid for the midfielder. Burnley and Wolves are also interested.
Phil Hay claimed earlier this week that Marcelo Bielsa secretly admires the 26-year-old midfielder.
Leeds Live journalist, Beren Cross, has provided an update on the situation in a Q&A session.
He has claimed that Swift is a player both Victor Orta and Bielsa “are aware of”, but at the same time, he has suggested that he is “not aware” whether Leeds have ever shown any interest in the midfielder.
“Swift will certainly be a player Orta and Bielsa are aware of. An English talent at 26 with an expiring contract is hard to ignore. After a few injury issues across the past few seasons, he has continued to play well this season and led from the front with Reading,” wrote Cross for Leeds Live.
“Evidently, he will leave there in January for a smaller fee or wait to go for nothing next summer. It is fair to say he has outgrown the Berkshire club. I am not aware Leeds have ever shown strong interest in taking Swift to Elland Road, and that includes the Championship days.”
Good signing for Leeds?
Swift is almost certain to leave the club in January. His contract expires in the summer, and Reading will look to cash in on him in January, although he would be available at a bargain price.
He has been in very good form this season, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists thus far. He has been hailed as “outstanding” this year already.
Leeds could be looking to sign a midfielder in January. This is one area where Marcelo Bielsa needs to add depth and quality but is Swift the solution to the problem?
The finance is not an issue. Leeds can meet his asking price. But is he better than what Leeds already have? Moreover, can he play the box-to-box role?
The talent is there but he is unproven at this level. Leeds should look at a more experienced midfielder instead.
