BBC journalist responds when asked if Marcelo Bielsa will stay at Leeds if season is voided

Leeds United pulled off a near miracle when they managed to hire Marcelo Bielsa in 2018 and then keep him on for an extra season after missing out on promotion last year.

Leeds, luckily, had the option to activate a 12-month extension to his deal last summer, ensuring that the Argentine would have a second stab at taking the Whites back to the Premier League.

Up until March, it was all fine and dandy with Leeds top of the Championship and seven points clear of third with nine matches left to play.

It seemed that Bielsa was going to achieve his goal of winning promotion before the coronavirus pandemic led to the Championship season being brought to a halt.

Leeds fans are now concerned about what would happen with Bielsa is the season is declared null and void.

In December, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported that Bielsa will quit Elland Road if Leeds do not go up this season so if the 2019/20 campaign is scrapped, there is a chance the ex-Marseille boss will walk.

BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope has recently been asked by a Leeds fan whether Bielsa would decided to stay if the season is declared void.

He responded: “He said last year the division Leeds were in was irrelevant to how he regards the club. I expect it would depend on the conditions being right for him to stay.”

If the season had played out as normal and Leeds finished third or below and failed to win the play-offs then you can bet that Bielsa would have walked.

But this season has been anything but normal and the extenuating circumstances could lead to Bielsa staying on another year if the EFL end up scrapping the entire campaign.

We all know what a nice bloke Bielsa is and we reckon that if that happens, he will stay out of loyalty but we hope he can pick up where he left off with this soon as soon as possible.
