Former Leeds United defender Stephen Warnock has singled out Luke Ayling for praise after his side beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Friday.

Patrick Bamford stole the headlines with his second-half hattrick as his goals fired Marcelo Bielsa’s side up to third in the Premier League table.

But, on Saturday night, Warnock tweeted that Ayling was the ‘standout player’ in the game and said he could play ‘anywhere’ while praising his former side’s ‘incredible football’.

Ayling made a goal-stopping block on the line in the first half, as he got back quickly to block Jack Grealish’s shot as it looked certain that the England international had opened the scoring.

Some of the ball had actually crossed the line so the Leeds defender did very well to hook the ball away and keep the scores level.

The 29-year-old has proved to be as much of a vital player in the Premier League as he was in the Championship as he has played every minute of Leeds’ season so far.

Leeds got back to winning ways after losing to Wolves last Monday. The Whites were unfortunate to lose that game but they learned that you can’t miss chances in the Premier League or you will be punished.

For a while on Friday it looked as though history was repeating itself as Leeds missed a few chances to take the lead. However, Bamford made sure he was clinical in the first-half and his three strikes secured the points and ended Villa’s unbeaten start to the season.

Leeds will look to continue their good form when they take on Leicester in their next Premier League game. Ayling’s side will want to get a home win in the bag after their disappointing outing at Elland Road last time out.

In other Leeds United news, Jemaine Jenas was blown away by two moments in Leeds 3-0 win v Aston Villa.
