Jermaine Jenas has been waxing lyrical about Patrick Bamford after the Leeds United striker scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa on Friday night.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side got themselves back to winning ways at the expense of Villa’s 100 per cent start courtesy of Bamford scoring all three goals in a 3-0 win at Villa Park.
Bamford, 27, was widely criticised by fans for not scoring as often he should have done in the Championship while it became Leeds’ prime objective in the transfer window to sign a new centre-forward, presumably to replace the misfiring ex-Chelsea man.
However, Bamford now has six goals in his first six appearances back in the Premier League and Jenas could not help by watch in awe as the Leeds striker rounded off his hat-trick in style on Friday night.
“The next two goals are just sensational – they really are,” said Jenas on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night.
“This is a player playing with confidence. That’s zero back-lift. He’s just stood there and hit it.
“This one [Bamford’s third goal] is my favourite because it’s little delicate touches – tiny little inches – and then to get his body into the right position to bend that into the top corner, that’s the sign of a striker playing with real confidence.”
This is what happens to strikers when they rediscover they form – it takes a lot to stop them.
While you could criticise Villa’s defending for some of what happened on Friday night, there’s no taking away from the fact that Bamford scored two superb goals in the West Midlands.
He opened his account for the night with a relatively routine tap-in, but that’s all it can take for a striker to get enough confidence to continue scoring.
Would the Bamford of last season scored the second and third goals against Villa in the Championship? We don’t think so.
The former Middlesbrough man missed so many chances to score last term that it was a joke and at times, the criticism aimed at him was fair.
Now we’re starting to see a massive improvement in efficiency from Bamford and that is why he is scoring so many goals in the opening weeks of the new Premier League season.
