Aston Villa to prioritise Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips if they get relegated

Aston Villa are reportedly set to make Kalvin Phillips their immediate target if Leeds United get relegated in the 2021/22 season.

According to The Athletic, the England international has been discussed at board level and is someone both the recruitment team as well as the coaching staff are keen on bringing to the club.

Villa, who are owned by American billionaire Wes Edens, have already spent a few hundred million over the past couple of seasons.

Will he leave?

With all due respect to Villa, they are not the calibre of club Phillips would want to leave his boyhood club for.

Phillips was one of the best central midfielders in Europe, let alone the Premier League, last season.

This term, due to injuries, he has been restricted to just making 12 Premier League appearances.

However, the 25-year-old could be nearing the prime in his career and deserves to play Champions League football.

Villa are still a few seasons away from getting to that level – assuming everything goes as per plan.

The only way Phillips leaves is if someone like Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea show an interest in him.

They’re sides that compete in the Champions League every season and challenge for league titles.

This summer is going to be an interesting one and if the Whites are to retain their key players then they have to survive at all costs.
