Andy Townsend blown away by Leeds United forward Willy Gnonto in 3-1 v Manchester City
Andy Townsend has been left impressed with Leeds United forward Willy Gnonto after his brilliant performance in the 3-1 defeat against Manchester City.
Jesse Marsch made a bold decision by picking Gnonto ahead of Jack Harrison, and the young forward heavily impressed at Elland Road on Wednesday (28 December).
Townsend, who also works for BBC Sport, hailed Gnonto as “dangerous” after he took the ball from the left and ran into the box with a menacing pace.
“Good play that from Gnonto. Take a bit of care with the first pass, just got it behind City, got it wide, that’s where Gnonto is particularly dangerous when he is running at people with the ball in his feet. Very good,” said Townsend while commentating on the game on Premier League World feed [28 December, 38 minutes].
When Leeds signed Gnonto on the transfer deadline day, eyebrows were raised.
Many felt that the youngster was not yet ready for Premier League football, but he is proving everyone wrong.
Marsch was full of praise for the youngster after the match, and he deserves that.
It is interesting to note that, Gnonto has kept Harrison out of the first team eleven at the moment, and it is no mean feat.
Harrison is an experienced winger who has made 12 starts this season, but he is now finding it really difficult to get into the starting line-up.
Leeds did play really well in the first half, where they set up defensively and looked for counter attack. They managed to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side for a while, but sloppy defending had hurt them badly once again.
This is one area that the Whites need to improve. In an attempt to play an expansive style, they sometimes lack the art to control the tempo of the game.
