Andy Goldstein shares what Tottenham fans did to Emerson Royal in win v Leeds United

There was an awful lot going on when Leeds United were beaten 4-3 by Tottenham Hotspur before the World Cup break and one thing slipped under the radar.

Andy Goldstein had friends in attendance at the imaginatively-named Tottenham Hotspur Stadium who could not believe the reception one Spurs player got.

Emerson Royal started the game at right wing-back but was eventually subbed off after an hour to rapturous applause from the home support due to a dreadful display against Crysencio Summerville.

“I’ve got friends who were at Spurs at the weekend and he was subbed off after about 60 minutes,” Goldstein said on talkSPORT. “My mate said there was a standing ovation to get him off.”

Jesse Marsch’s side had taken the lead on three separate occasions in the capital but Rodrigo Bentancur eventually netted the seventh and final goal of the game to win it for the home side.

Fan power

All of the big decisions may be made by the head honchos both on and off the pitch at every football club in the country but the say of the fans will always play a major factor.

If a supporters group don’t agree with a decision or change made by the club then they will not hesitate to make their feelings known and Leeds United supporters wouldn’t be against it either.

Luckily, there has not been much to protest about in recent seasons and while the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa caused some disgruntlement at Elland Road, most fans were able to park their love for the Argentinian and realise that it had to be done.

Marsch has since quashed those worries and even with Leeds low down in the Premier League, results have not yet represented the performances in most matches.

Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta will always listen to the fans so if there is a problem, it will be sorted.

In other Leeds United news, there has been more movement on the Cody Gakpo front which could see him become available in January.
