American media react to Brenden Aaronson as Leeds United return called into question

Leeds United’s on-loan midfielder Brenden Aaronson has raised questions about a potential return after his recent performance for Union Berlin, according to AmericanSoccerNow.

The US-based football website said that Aaronson was “the best player on the field” in Union Berlin’s 4-3 loss to VFL Bochum, and wondered whether his improved form could lead to him making an Elland Road comeback next season.

Leeds loaned the American international to Union after their relegation from the Premier League last season, but there is currently no deal in place for the Bundesliga side to make the move permanent.

The report from AmericanSoccerNow stated: “Aaronson has been playing well since he was left off the USMNT roster. That bodes well for his chances of making the Copa America.”

Then the question came though: “But he’s in club limbo soon. Does Leeds want him back? Has he done enough for Union to make an offer?”

Will Brenden Aaronson return to Leeds United?

Leeds United saw a fire-sale, or rather a fire-loaning, of players in the summer of 2023, after meekly dropping out of the Premier League.

Aaronson was one of several players to exercise loan clauses in their contracts, allowing himself, Robin Koch, Jack Harrison, Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen, Max Wober and Marc Roca all to leave on season-long loans, rather than sealing permanent transfers away from Elland Road.

Those departures left Leeds with plenty of work to do in the transfer market and very little financial recompense, pouring water on the potential for any of the loanees to be welcomed back with open arms by the club’s fans.

Leeds United loanee Brenden Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson managed just one goal from 36 Premier League appearances in his first season at Leeds United.

23-year-old Aaronson was the most expensive of these players to temporarily depart for no transfer fee, and his up-and-down form for Union Berlin has not boosted the chances of Leeds bringing in a significant windfall for the midfielder if he is to leave permanently this summer.

It’s still up in the air whether Aaronson or any of his fellow loanees will ever return to the first-team setup at Elland Road, but Leeds will hold the cards if they’re able to make an immediate Premier League return.

With the Championship play-offs coming up, their full focus is on the current squad at hand, and if the Whites are able to win promotion, Leeds fans will be keen to make Aaronson and Co very aware that they played no part in getting the club back to the top-flight.
