Ally McCoist stunned by Leeds United star Liam Cooper for Scotland

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper was handed a rare start for Scotland on Friday evening against Moldova.

The Scots picked up a vital three points and secured a World Cup play-off spot next year with a 2-0 win.

Ally McCoist was stunned by Cooper and his defensive work, as he shackled the Moldovan attack with ease at times without losing focus.

Speaking on Sky Sports this evening, McCoist singled out Cooper for his work in the middle of a back three.

“It’s excellent play from Cooper,” he said.

“He didn’t give him anywhere to go, forced him down a one-way street and won possession back.”

Consistency.

When injuries and everything has been going wrong around him in the past couple of years, Cooper has been the one man standing tall.

Yes, there has been numerous blunders and mistakes, but it takes a strong character to stand up and keep performing every single week.

Marcelo Bielsa has kept faith in his skipper, and he has repaid the faith with brilliant performances against the likes of West Ham, Wolves and Leicester.

Being handed another chance of Scotland is reflective of that, and although Moldova being a minnow in comparison to the Premier League, he did his job.

McCoist was right to single out Cooper, who was somewhat an unsung hero for his country who were suffering from real injury problems at the back.

Standing up and being that middle man of the back three was the perfect role for Cooper, and he proved that once again.
