Alan Shearer names Illan Meslier in Premier League team of the week after Leeds United win v Liverpool

Alan Shearer has named Leeds United ace Illan Meslier in his official Premier League team of the week after his performance in the win over Liverpool.

The Whites ended an eight-game winless run when they went to Anfield on Saturday night (29 October) and snatched a vital win in the final minutes thanks to youngster Crysencio Summerville’s goal.

But it was goalkeeper Meslier who took the headlines after making a season-high nine saves in the game to keep his side in it up to that point, and Shearer told the official Premier League website (31 October) that he was his man of the match when naming him in his team of the week.

“Man of the match,” he said. “An array of brilliant saves set his side on the way to victory at Liverpool.”

Leeds’ win moved them out of the relegation zone, although they have played a game less than all of the sides below them in the table so far this season.

Meslier has really established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe this season with his excellent performances, and this was probably the best of the bunch.

He made huge saves at different points of the game that kept Liverpool out, but it also did more than just keep the score down.

It kept the fans relatively quiet, kept Leeds in the game and built the foundation for a terrific finale which saw them pick up three points that they should’ve claimed weeks ago based on their performances this season.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has been ruled out of the World Cup so with these performances starting to get the recognition they deserve, Meslier could well sneak into the squad for the winter tournament.

It would be the least he deserves and would be another great sign for Leeds’ development as a club in recent years that they’ve nurtured him from the ground to a potential superstar.
