Alan Shearer blown away by Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt

Alan Shearer believes Joe Gelhardt’s performance was one of the many positives from the Leeds United v Chelsea game on Saturday.

The 19-year-old’s goal seemed to have secured a draw for Leeds, but a late penalty by Jorginho saw the Blues winning 3-2.

However, Gelhardt’s cameo certainly made the headlines, and Shearer raved about it on Match of the Day.

He said, “There were plenty of positives from that game. Certainly one of them was Gelhardt getting his first goal, 19 years of age, with his first touch after him coming on.”

What a performance

Gelhardt is already forming the reputation of being a super sub for Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine threw him on against Wolves and he rescued the game for his side by winning a penalty and applied the finishing touches himself this time against Chelsea.

There was plenty being written about the youngster before his first-team bow and he’s certainly lived up to the expectations.

Every time the team are chasing a game, they’ll know that him coming off the bench is going to give them some chance of getting back in the action.

It is important that he’s not burned out and used sparingly at that age as there is a tendency for teams to start the in-form players.

Patrick Bamford should hopefully be back in the coming days and lead the line as the side have missed someone putting in the hard yards to close the defenders down in the final third.
