After Phil Hay loan reveal, Leeds reportedly part of two-tier move for highly-rated left-back
Leeds United are set to rely heavily on loan deals in the next transfer window, according to Phil Hay, and a fascinating link with Polish left-back Michał Karbownik has been reported.
As quoted by Sport.PL, Polish journalist Tomasz Smokowski has outlined a possible move for the 19-year-old Legia Warsaw left-back by Man City – a move that could immediately benefit Leeds.
Smokowksi said: “One of the clubs that is interested in him [Karbownik] is Manchester City, not for themselves but for Leeds United because these clubs work closely together and Leeds cannot afford the player themselves.
“It would be a transfer on the principle: buy him, rent him to Leeds, and if he works out we will take him.”
Smokowski went on to say, “In my opinion, the most interesting offer is the one he has from Red Bull Salzburg. I think that would be interesting, but there is one problem. Salzburg do not want to pay a fee of 10-12 million. They prefer to pay less, and offer a percentage of his next transfer fee.”
The link with Man City is a fascinating one.
There’s no doubt that Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa enjoy a good relationship, and the Man City manager thinks highly of the Leeds man.
The loan move for Jack Harrison has worked out extremely well for both clubs and for the player.
And this isn’t the first time we’ve read of an arrangement like this involving Man City.
Phil Hay has said that Man City are on the brink of signing right-back Jan Couto and then moving him straight onto Leeds on a loan deal.
It means Leeds are looking to leverage money from other clubs to get access to players they couldn’t afford to sign on permanent deals.
The downside for Leeds would be that if the players hit their true potential, they’re unlikely to stay at Elland Road for the long-term.
Karbownik makes a lot of sense as Leeds are short of a natural left-back. Karbownik can also play on the right and in midfield, which would give Bielsa even more options.
And he’s been described as one of the greatest young talents in Poland in recent years.
However, it does beg the question – how many young players do Leeds want to take on loan in the Premier League?
