Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that “highly-rated” Brazilian teenager Yan Couto is on the brink of signing a five-year deal with Man City.
That’s a major commitment for a player who City obviously have very high hopes for.
And if he does sign for Pep’s side, Leeds could be the immediate beneficiaries.
Talking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast on Friday, Hay said, “He [Couto] is about to sign a five-year deal with them [Man City].
“He’s a Brazilian player who’s coming over from South America and is very highly-rated down there.
“He’s someone Leeds looked at and thought about, and were making inroads into approaching and discussing terms with until it became clear he was so good that teams like Man City and others were all over him.
“We were told that City were interested in, if Leeds did get promoted, that a year with Bielsa at Elland Road could be very good for him, as it’s been good for Jack Harrison. Couto is one to watch.”
Couto might only be 17 but he could prove to be a really big player under Bielsa.
The fact that Man City are set to sign him on a five-year-deal says exactly what they think about his prospects.
Arsenal were said to be in talks about signing him back in January when his agent said he would cost over £4m.
It seems that Man City are set to win a bidding war with his price having more than trebled since then. The Athletic had previously reported that Couto would cost £13.6m.
That’s a huge amount of money for a teenage player, although he has already been compared to Dani Alves by the Guardian.
However, would he displace Luke Ayling at right-back? Ayling has had a brilliant season in the Championship and Bielsa is a loyal manager.
It would have been much better for Leeds if Couto was on the other flank, where there is an ongoing issue for Leeds.
