49ers investors could completely back out of Leeds United takeover deal – Phil Hay
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested that some members of the 49ers Enterprises could back out of buying Leeds United if the club is relegated.
Leeds are set to be taken over by the 49ers in January 2024, however, a move could be pushed forward to the end of the 2022/23 season.
Speaking on the latest edition of the Phil Hay Show, The Athletic journalist has claimed relegation could spark a lack of interest from some members.

“I don’t think it would be right to say that every single investor in the group that 49ers Enterprises have put together – I can’t speak for them – but I would be surprised if all of them wanted to stay in the mix for a club in the EFL,” said Hay (Phil Hay Show, 22m 22s, 12 May).
“But of course, a club in the EFL isn’t going to cost as much as a club who’s in the Premier League.
“The investment you need is smaller and the money you’d need to put together that deal isn’t quite the same level.”
Damaging
Relegation could be damaging in so many ways for Leeds. They could be forced to sell a number of their best players, Andrea Radrizzani will lose millions and the 49ers could lose interest. The pressure is firmly on Sam Allardyce to get a tune out of the players during the final three fixtures of the season.
They do have a chance. Newcastle are enjoying an excellent campaign but are coming off of a loss to Arsenal and are under pressure to secure their Champions League place. Elland Road simply has to be used to Leeds’ advantage.

West Ham could well be safe by the time Leeds make the trip to the London Stadium, and David Moyes’ side could have a European final to look forward to. Finally, Spurs could also have nothing to play for by the time they make the trip to West Yorkshire on the final day of the season.
At least four points are required to save Leeds’ season and potentially the 49ers’ takeover of the club.
In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
