TV pundit points out one thing about Augustin that’s unlikely to fill Leeds fans with confidence

Dean Ashton has suggested he is unconvinced that Jean-Kevin Augustin is going to be able to fire the goals that Leeds United need to win promotion this season.

Leeds have won just one of their last five Championship fixtures and dropped to second in the league on Saturday as they lost at home against struggling Wigan.

Patrick Bamford, as well as other attacking players, squandered plenty of chances in that game in what has become a recurring theme for the Whites this term.

Jean-Kevin Augustin was brought in on loan from RB Leipzig last month in a bid to help fire Leeds back to the Premier League, however, he is yet to feature for the Yorkshire giants since his arrival.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Monaco, scoring one goal in 13 appearances across all competitions before that deal was terminated so he could head to Elland Road.

Ex-Norwich striker Ashton is unsure that fans will be pleased to see Marcelo Bielsa signing a striker with just one goal to his name this season.

“You bring in a new striker in Augustin, who’s scored one goal in the French League Cup. That doesn’t fill the fans full of confidence, I wouldn’t have thought,” said Ashton on EFL on Quest on Saturday night.

We assume that Ashton has not done any research on Augustin.

Yes, he only scored one goal at Monaco, but has also started just five matches in all competitions and that one goal he scored came against a top side in Marseille.

Augustin hardly had a chance to impress at the Ligue 1 club so it is better to look at his record from before this season before judging him.

The ex-PSG striker scored 20 times in 67 appearances for RB Leipzig, with goals coming in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

It’s safe to say that he shouldn’t find the Championship too difficult and Ashton should worry about his own opinions rather than guessing what Leeds fans are thinking.

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has issued a one-word response to West Brom going top of the league.
