'Totally, utterly useless' - Jeff Stelling and Tony Cottee destroy Leeds star in win v Hull

Jeff Stelling and Sky Sports pundit Tony Cottee tore Pablo Hernandez to shreds as Leeds United went on to win 2-0 against Hull City on Tuesday night.

Hernandez, 34, was nowhere near his best at Elland Road despite the Whites returning to the top of the Championship table with their seventh consecutive win.

According to stats by WhoScored, the Spaniard completed 76 per cent of his passes against the Tigers and only striker Patrick Bamford has a lower pass success rate out of those in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Hernandez’ display was summed up by one moment in the second half when he appeared to try and have a shot at goal when taking a corner kick.

The former Valencia and Swansea attacker basically kicked the ball out of play when the game was still goalless and that led to Sky Sports News host Stelling and ex-West Ham star Cottee to slam him for his decision-making at that one moment.

“They are pressing and do have a corner which is absolutely, totally, utterly useless. Goes straight into the side netting. Goodness gracious me,” said Stelling on Sky Sports News on Tuesday night during the second half.

Cottee said: “When it’s a poor game, set-pieces are so crucial and vital. He’s trying to shoot.

“Hernandez has taken the corner, he’s trying to shoot on the left-hand side and he’s just whipped the ball out of play into the side-netting. It just sums it up.”

After watching the replay again, Stelling said: “He only just hit the side-netting.”

It really was bizarre what Hernandez did.

Was it a really poor decision by him or did he just complete miskick the ball?

Either way, as Cottee pointed out, it summed up Leeds’ performance up until that point because it was not too long after when the Whites went ahead thanks to an own goal by Jordy de Wijs.

It is fair to say that Leeds rode their luck a bit against Hull and will need to improve a lot if they want to keep up this winning run and their toing and froing with West Brom.

In other Leeds United news, Jermaine Beckford is blown away by this trio of Leeds players.
