‘This is what we’re talking about’ – Le Tissier drools over Leeds ace with ‘brilliant technique’
Matt Le Tissier has raved about Kalvin Phillips after a standout performance for Leeds United against Blackburn today.
Phillips even scored from a free kick in the 40th minute and while it was a real rarity for Leeds it was worth the wait.
There were a lot of Leeds United fans who were screaming for Barry Douglas to take the free-kick just before half-time.
However, Phillips hit the perfect strike and the goal took the stuffing out of a plucky Blackburn side.
Talking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports, Saturday, 3pm) Le Tissier said, “The Phillips free-kick was absolutely superb, that settled the nerves and there weren’t really too many scares after that.
“The first goal, Bamford finishes nice and calm. Kalvin Phillips, the free-kick, this is what we’re talking about. This is absolutely top drawer, brilliant technique, gave the goalie no chance.
“The third goal, I still think it should have been disallowed for offside… maybe he just got back onside. Klich with the finish.”
Jeff Stelling drew a brilliant response from Le Tissier when he asked, “Every neutral wants to see Leeds back in the Premier League?”
“Probably not,” Le Tissier replied. “I say that because I’ve got two brothers who support Leeds. No, but it’s a massive football club and one that’s been out of the Premier League for too long.”
Phillips or Bruno?
Wow, what a free-kick, but the question we were asking ourselves was, where did that come from?
Leeds have been really poor from set pieces all season, to the extent that Bielsa had him and his staff pouring over examples from Europe’s top leagues over lockdown in a bid to improve them.
This was as good as it gets, though.
Some fans on Twitter were saying that if Bruno Fernandes did this people would be going crazy.
Well, as it happens, Bruno was at it for Man United today in the Premier League, but Phillips’ effort was up there with it.
It was a really important goal but it was his overall performance that really thrilled us today.
When Phillips plays like this, Leeds click and there was no stopping him at Ewood Park.
Which is just as well because Brentford have seemingly turned into Barcelona. They swatted away Wigan today and we can see them winning every game this season.
All Leeds need to do is get 10 more points, though, and anything anyone else does is irrelevant. Phillips will be a huge part of this.
