‘Terrible’, ‘Shocking’, ‘Going to cost us’ – Many Leeds fans blast one player in win v B’burn

Leeds United fans have blasted Illan Meslier for his performance in goals on Saturday as the Whites beat Blackburn 3-1 at Ewood Park.

Meslier, 20, is continuing to stand in for the suspended Kiko Casilla and although he has been widely praised for his efforts this season, the French shot-stopper was not in the good books of most fans this weekend.

One of the main issues that fans have with Meslier is his distribution.

According to LeedsLive, even Marcelo Bielsa was frustrated by the way the 20-year-old plays the ball out of the back but stats by WyScout suggest he misplaced just one short-range pass and his long-range accuracy was 75 per cent.

There have also been some frustration about him failing to keep a clean sheet at Ewood Park with Meslier’s positioning being described as “terrible” for Blackburn’s goal.

We think that is very, very unfair.

Adam Armstrong’s free-kick was in a central position, which meant that the wall had to be in a central position too.

If Meslier had also taken a central position, he would not have been able to see the flight of the ball so he positioned himself to one side as Blackburn lined up with a right and left-footed player to take the free-kick.

It was a risk and one that didn’t pay off but there are too many fans who are not prepared to admit that it was simply a good strike by Armstrong.

Some Leeds fans love to pick the negative out of what was a wholly positive day and we really cannot get on board with criticising players when it’s really not merited.
